QNUK Level 3 Award for First Responders (RQF)

This QNUK Level 3 Award for First Responders is a four day course and is used by those who need to go beyond standard level First Aid, who may have access to more advanced medical equipment and resources. Typical learners include security operatives, construction and industrial first aiders and is useful for anyone who needs to be able to look after casualties for extended periods of time, in potentially challenging conditions.

Compared to other Level 3 Pre-Hospital Care qualifications on the market such as First Response Emergency Care (FREC), this qualification meets more level D competency descriptors on The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh Faculty of Pre-hospital Care (FPHC) Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) framework. This qualification is delivered in line with our Clinical Governance Policy.

What's covered on the course?

In addition to lifesaving skills (CPR, AED, Choking etc.) and management of medical emergencies, this course also covers (not exhaustive):

Scene management and safeguarding
Advanced airway management
Aspiration/suction
Airway adjuncts - oropharyngeal airways (OPAs) and nasopharyngeal airways (NPAs)
Oxygen administration (optional extra)
Pulse oximetry
Catastrophic haemorrhage control
Tourniquets
Specialist trauma dressings such as Israeli and Olaes modular dressings
Managing trauma related injuries
Head, spinal and pelvic injuries
Hypothermia and Hyperthermia

Oxygen Administration is not automatically a part of the First Responders course, however we include a bolt on qualification, the QNUK Level 3 Award in Oxygen Administration.

Course Requirements

Learners must be at least 18 years old on the first day of training. To get the most out of our training it is recommended that learners have sufficient command of the English language in order to understand the assessment and to undertake the recommended assessment methods.

Also, due to the nature of this qualification, learners should be physically capable of undertaking practical assessments in a range of environments.

How are our courses delivered?

All of our courses are hands-on. We’ll show you how to do something – then you’ll have a go. We’ll practice how to deal with whole incidents, from finding someone in need to the point where they’re handed over to the professionals. After all, when someone becomes ill or is injured, you’ll need to manage the whole incident – not just be able to perform a couple of stand alone skills.

This 24 hour Advanced First Aid course is usually completed over 4 days and is carefully designed to create skilful, resourceful and confident Advanced First Aiders capable of effectively handling a variety of emergency scenarios. The course is assessed via practical observations and one multiple choice question paper (60 questions). There is plenty of opportunity for the scenario based training throughout the course (including in the outdoors), to build and maintain confidence in dealing with a wide variety of emergencies.

This certificate is valid for 3 years and is also suitable for:

Those wishing to go beyond First Aid at Work level
Those wishing to become involved in event cover
Those wishing to become involved in Mountain Rescue or other search and rescue agencies
