It's great news; there is now a much bigger emphasis on supporting people and employees with their mental health and wellbeing as well as their physical health.
According to Mental Health First Aid England, mental ill health is responsible for 91 million working days lost every year. Mental ill health costs UK employers an estimated £34.9 billion each year - the equivalent of £1,300 for every employee in the UK workforce.
Employers across the UK are taking action to support the wellbeing of their people and nurture mentally healthy workplaces. Do you want to join them?
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an internationally recognised training course, established in over 20 countries across the globe and the training is accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health.
The aim is to raise awareness and to reduce any stigma, as well as teach people to spot the symptoms of mental health issues, offer initial help on a first aid basis and guide a person towards further support.
The course isn't designed to teach people to be therapists, but does teach people to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis - and even potentially stop a crisis from happening.
Two Day Mental Health First Aid Course
The two day course qualifies delegates as a Mental Health First Aider. Mental Health First Aiders have:
- An in depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
- Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
- Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
- Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
- Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix
A minimum of 8 people are required per course, with a maximum of 16. This is so the instructor can fully support the group and so there are ample opportunities for worthwhile discussion.
Everyone who completes the course gets an MHFA manual to keep and refer to whenever they need it, and a certificate to say they are a Mental Health First Aider.

Further Support for your Organisation
Organising training for your workplace, so that your people feel confident to support their colleagues is a great step to take. However, it's just as important to make sure that those employees who have stepped up to become Mental Health First Aiders are also supported by the organisation's overall ethos, strategy, and policies and procedures in place.
What do they do if they feel overwhelmed or worried about how they've supported a colleague? We can support your organisation to develop your policies and procedures to make sure that they're up to date, encompass mental health and wellbeing and that there are suitable provisions in place for all.
