Are All First Aid Courses the Same? Why ‘Cheap’ Costs More

The short answer? No – not all first aid courses are the same.
Looking to ensure workplace first aid training compliance? Read on!
Like most things in life, first aid training comes in all shapes and sizes – the great, the bad, and everything in between.
If you scroll through social media on any given week, you’ll see plenty of training photos. While most providers mean well, some of the techniques being taught across the UK are frankly eye-watering:
- Pressure dressings applied around a casualty’s neck
- Defibrillator (AED) pads placed incorrectly, or CPR stopping entirely while pads are stuck on
- Adult CPR practiced on a high table, or infants receiving CPR whilst held at a 45-degree angle
- Tourniquets applied or secured incorrectly
- Towels laid along an arm to “protect the spine”…
When it comes to Life Saving Training in Newcastle in the North East of England, getting the details right isn’t just about passing a test – it’s about having the confidence to act when a real emergency happens. Otherwise – what’s the point?
How to Choose the Right First Aid Provider
Employers have a duty of care to complete a First Aid Needs Assessment and exercise due diligence before booking a provider. When you’re comparing options for workplace first aid training compliance, consider these key factors:
1. Compliance and Course Duration
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) sets strict minimum hours for workplace qualifications. For example, a standard 1-Day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course requires 6 full hours of instruction (excluding breaks). A 3-Day First Aid at Work (FAW) course requires a minimum of 18 hours.
If a provider advertises an EFAW course running from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, mathematically, it cannot be HSE-compliant unless you skip breaks and lunch entirely (which isn’t ideal for learning!). Early finishes might sound tempting, but cutting course hours short leaves you short-changed on vital skills and compliance.
2. Practical Hands-On Time
A course should give you real muscle memory, not fill your time with word searches or sitting around watching 11 other people share one training manikin.
At Life Saving Training, we cap our equipment ratio at one manikin per two learners for groups up to 12 – exceeding the basic industry requirement of four manikins per room. More equipment means more hands-on practice, plain and simple.
We’ve also invested in advanced QCPR manikins. Linked directly to an iPad, these give real-time feedback on compression depth and speed along with how much breath is going into the ‘patient’. Research shows that immediate visual feedback significantly improves the quality of CPR performance.
3. Experienced, Inclusive Instructors
A cheap course often means a training provider hired a freelance instructor off a social media forum without ever meeting them.
Our team takes a different approach. Every trainer at Life Saving Training far surpasses basic standards. Beyond having current, hands-on real-world experience, we’re skilled communicators who adapt to every learner. Whether catering to neurodiversity, supporting nervous first-timers, or stretching experienced staff, we nurture an inclusive environment where everyone can succeed.
4. Hygiene Standards
Your health and safety during training matter to us. We deep-clean our manikins between every single session, using fresh internal ‘lungs’ and filters for every course. It takes extra effort and cost, but we refuse to cut corners on hygiene.
5. Relevant, Environment-Specific Content
First aid training shouldn’t be an ‘off-the-shelf’ lecture. A primary school teacher needs different practical context than an arborist using chainsaws outside or an engineer working around heavy machinery.
We tailor our scenarios to your actual working or home environment. If your team faces specific hazards – like needing catastrophic bleed management or advanced outdoor techniques – we make sure those skills are thoroughly covered.
